Broncos Ownership Buys Minority Stake in Rockies
The Penner Sports Group, part of the ownership group of the Denver Broncos, has purchased a minority stake in the Colorado Rockies, according to multiple reports. The purchase has been formally approved by Major League Baseball.
The Penner Sports Group is comprised of the family entity of Greg and Carrie Penner, who are among the owners of the Broncos. That sports group has purchased a nearly 40% stake in the neighboring Rockies, becoming the club’s largest minority partner.
The Rockies confirmed that the Monfort family will remain majority owners, with Dick Monfort serving as chairman and CEO, Charlie Monfort as owner/general partner, and Walker Monfort as club president.
NFL owners approved the Walton-Penner group’s $4.65 billion purchase of the Broncos in August 2022, following a unanimous recommendation from the league’s finance committee. The Walton-Penner group entered a sale agreement with the Pat Bowlen Trust two months before the final approval, and after the league's finance committee unanimously approved the sale.
The Walton-Penner group includes Rob Walton, son of Walmart founder Sam Walton; Carrie Walton-Penner and her husband Greg Penner, chair of the Walmart board; Melody Hobson, co-CEO of Ariel Investments and board chair of Starbucks; former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton.
The Rockies played their inaugural home opener at Mile High Stadium to record crowds of more than 80,000 fans against the Montreal Expos (who have since relocated and are now the Washington Nationals) on April 9, 1993. The team moved to Coors Field in 1995.
The Broncos and Rockies have been on very different trajectories. Denver is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances, including a run to the 2025 AFC Championship Game. Colorado, meanwhile, has endured three consecutive 100-loss seasons, finishing 43-119 in 2025 – narrowly avoiding the MLB record for losses in a 162-game campaign.
The Rockies are off to a 6-7 start in 2026. They completed a three-game series sweep of the Houston Astros at Coors Field on Wednesday. The Broncos, on the other hand, are turning their attention to the 2026 NFL Draft. They won’t have a first-round pick after sending it to the Miami Dolphins in a trade for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
